At the middle of the hedge maze on the Oso Creek Trail, where a child running the paths eventually comes out, there is a four-sided mosaic obelisk. One face shows the Liberty Bell, one the Declaration of Independence, one a Revolutionary War soldier, and the fourth an eagle beside a California bear. It was dedicated on July 4. Tomorrow evening, Friday, November 6, its indoor counterpart goes on display a few miles away. It is a quilt pieced from red, white and blue blocks that residents sewed at Mission Viejo Library.
Mission Viejo placed its 250th-anniversary markers in two places people already go every week, made both to last, and had people from the community help shape them. When the anniversary year ends in December, the obelisk and the quilt will stay where they are. Most of the city's holiday calendar falls within a short walk of the quilt.
A Marker in the Middle of the City's Busiest Path
The location says a lot about the obelisk. The Oso Creek Trail is the city's most-used recreational path. It draws about 7,000 visitors a week, Genesis Hansen, Mission Viejo's director of library and cultural arts, told the Orange County Register for its October 27 feature on the trail. With neighborhood connectors and park access paths included, it runs about 5.5 miles roughly north to south through the Oso Creek Corridor, near Marguerite Parkway, La Paz Road and Pavion Street.
The city designed the America250 obelisk with the Mission Viejo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The chapter's artist and past Regent, Maryann Rudolph Herrera, designed the four panels, and Joseph & Sons Mosaic Artists were engaged to create and install the mosaic work. According to the DAR's event page, the obelisk and an America 250 Patriot Marker were dedicated together at the Hedge Maze on July 4, 2026.
It also fits with what was already on the trail. The obelisk is the second one along the path. The first is the long-standing Peace Obelisk near the community center. Mosaic is the trail's usual medium, and residents have spent years helping paint murals, shape installations and set tiles along the route. As Hansen put it to the Register, "It gives people a sense of ownership of the art."
What else is on the same walk
If the obelisk is your destination, these pieces are along the way:
- "Tunnel Vibration," the mural inside the Jeronimo Tunnel that seems to vibrate as you walk through it. Residents helped paint it in 2023, and the tunnel has since hosted a Pacific Symphony performance and a silent disco.
- The Celebration Garden, with mosaic pillars by several artists, each carrying narrative panels.
- The Character Garden, along with several of the city's themed bear sculptures. The bears come from "Bears About Town," a 2012 art project the city sponsored in which thousands of residents, many of them children, helped tile the mosaics.
- The butterfly garden and the hedge maze, with the new obelisk at its center.
Free parking and trail access are at 25104 Marguerite Parkway. The trail is open 24 hours, and access to Oso Viejo Community Park closes at 10 p.m. The Register notes that the trail has more than 2,600 reviews on AllTrails averaging 4.7 out of 5, which it believes makes it one of the most frequently reviewed urban trails in Orange County.
The Quilt Started With Sewing Machines
The obelisk was designed by one chapter artist and installed by a mosaic studio. The quilt was made more widely. The City of Mission Viejo's announcement traces it back to the library adding sewing machines. During the year, residents learned basic sewing and quilting, took classes, and made red, white and blue blocks for the project. Those blocks have now been stitched into one quilt.
More blocks came in than one quilt could use. The city says donations "exceeded expectations," leaving enough blocks for a second quilt, and that details on the second one will be shared at the unveiling.
Quilt unveiling: Friday, November 6, 2026, 6 to 7 p.m., Mission Viejo Library, 100 Civic Center. Music, light refreshments and brief remarks.
After Friday, the quilt stays on display at the library "for years to come," the city says. The library is also running rotating monthly displays on American history and life through the anniversary year, according to the city's America 250 page. Anyone who comes for the quilt can see the current display in the same visit.
From the Library to Veterans Way, Five Days Later
The next date on the calendar is close by, both in time and in place. The city's free Veterans Day Ceremony is Wednesday, November 11, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. It includes a ceremony followed by an outdoor reception. In a year built around the country's founding, this is the morning when that theme is about people who served.
The same building hosts a much older Mission Viejo tradition ten days later. The Mission Viejo Activities Committee's Gifts & Goodies Holiday Boutique returns for its 55th year on Saturday, November 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The committee lists more than 80 craft vendors, with free admission and parking. The 250th quilt was sewn by hand this year, and the boutique has brought local handmade work to Veterans Way every year for more than five decades.
The Holidays Move Into Civic Center Plaza
After Thanksgiving, events move to the plaza outside the library's front door.
- Sunday, November 29: Santa's Arrival and Lighting Celebration at Civic Center Plaza, 200 Civic Center Drive. The committee lists crafts, games, a petting zoo and performances, then Santa arrives at 6 p.m. and lights the city lights.
- December 2 to 20: Santa's Workshop at Santa's Village on Civic Center Plaza. It runs Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., and admission is free.
That puts the library, home to the anniversary quilt, next to Santa's Village for most of December. A family visiting the workshop on a weekend evening is a short walk from a quilt their neighbors helped sew.
One December event is outside this cluster. Lake Mission Viejo lists Light the Lake for Saturday, December 5, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with holiday music and the annual boat parade. The lake is run by a private homeowners association, and its guest policy requires guests to be hosted by a member. Anyone without a host should check with the association before planning on it.

At Green Group Real Estate, we follow what Mission Viejo is building as closely as we follow its homes, and a quilt made by neighbors at the public library is part of that. If you're at the unveiling Friday or out on the Oso Creek Trail this fall and want to talk about the city, or about your own next step in it, we'd be glad to hear from you. Contact Us.
